Bolivia’s great victory against US imperialism and the immense challenges ahead

Luis Arce and the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) achieved a landslide victory in the first round of Bolivia’s Presidential election on Sunday 18 October 2020. This spectacular triumph was the culmination of almost a year of intense struggle, led by Bolivia’s working class and indigenous majority, to reverse the US-backed military coup of November 2019 which overthrew the country’s legitimate and democratically elected President Evo Morales.

New study reveals that US-backed coup in Bolivia was based on lies

The blatant lies and hypocrisy of the US have been exposed with the publication of a new study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This shows there was no fraud in Bolivia’s presidential election last October.

The real fraud has actually been committed by the Trump administration. The notion that the US intervenes in countries around the world to promote ‘democracy’, ‘human rights’ or ‘freedom’ has once again been exposed as a total sham. In Bolivia, democracy has been overturned with the backing and material support of the US government, because the people elected the ‘wrong’ president.

The truth is that Evo Morales is the legitimate elected President of Bolivia. He won the election in October 2019 by a large margin in a free and fair contest.

In Bolivia you have to be careful with what you say and do, if you don't want a judge to accuse you of “sedition and terrorism” to put you behind bars. This was the case with Argentine and Venezuelan journalists who visited the country to report on the massacres. But the accusation is also directed at those whom the media have targeted. This is the case of former Deputy, former Government Deputy Minister, and current member of the National Assembly, Gustavo Torrico who, through Paris-La Paz contact, told us he practically takes his imminent arrest for granted.

The Comite Ciudadano (Citizens Committee), a right-wing coalition led by Bolivia’s ex-vice-president, Carlos Mesa, and Luis Fernando Camacho, a multimillionaire entrepreneur, leading the extreme right-wing pressure group Comite Civico (Civic Committee) of Santa Cruz, jointly launched a brutal wave of violence in many areas of the country aimed explicitly at ousting democratically elected President Evo Morales.
